Etymology Grapher

Follow the connections between words.

We explore relationships between words across languages through graphs that retain their sources and distinguish evidence from uncertainty.

Why this question matters

Words can share a meaning, a borrowing history, or an ancestor. Those are different relationships, and a useful graph should make the distinction visible.

What we are exploring

A local proof of concept stores source-backed assertions and explores lineage paths, retaining provisional and unresolved relationships.

Where the work stands

A missing connection means the graph does not establish it. Similarity, shared meaning, and a chain in a source are not automatically evidence of direct ancestry.
